The 2026 Independence Day Celebration, “250: Happy Birthday America,” marked Colbert’s 55th annual celebration while commemorating our nation’s 250th birthday.
Recognized as one of North Georgia’s largest Fourth of July celebrations, the event welcomes nearly 10,000 visitors to our small town. The parade often lasts more than an hour and includes community organizations, marching bands, antique tractors, classic vehicles, fire trucks, patriotic floats, veterans, first responders, and civic groups.
Year after year, the celebration showcases the pride, hospitality, and small-town spirit that make Colbert such a special place.

What began on July 4, 1970, as the July 4th Homecoming has grown into more than five decades of celebrating our nation’s independence, honoring Colbert’s local heritage, and bringing generations of families, friends, and neighbors together.
The original celebration was organized by the Tri-Community Clubs, made up of the Colbert Garden Club, the Colbert Beautification Committee, the Colbert Lions Club, and countless dedicated volunteers. Their vision, hard work, and love for the community laid the foundation for a tradition that continues to thrive.
In 1971, the Colbert Garden Club established the Garden of Remembrance, creating a lasting tribute that remains a meaningful part of Colbert’s story. Although many original members have passed away or moved on, their legacy continues through each new generation of volunteers.
Community Partners
Through the years, leadership of the celebration has been carried forward by the Colbert Lions Club, Colbert Volunteer Fire Department, Colbert Baptist Church, the Mayor and City Council, City staff, and an extraordinary network of community volunteers.
Beginning in 2024, the Red Canna Park Committee joined the Tri-Community Clubs in helping organize and support this cherished tradition, further strengthening the community partnership that has sustained the celebration for generations.
Behind the Scenes
An event of this size requires months of planning, coordination, fundraising, and volunteer service. Much of the year-round planning is led by City of Colbert staff.
From organizing logistics and coordinating vendors and sponsors to preparing decorations, managing event details, and working alongside the Colbert Volunteer Fire Department and Lions Club, the City Clerk’s office and City staff play an integral role in bringing the celebration to life.
Their dedication, combined with the support of community organizations and countless volunteers, helps ensure that each year’s celebration is a memorable experience for residents and visitors alike.

Former Mayor John Waggoner, who later served as City Advisor until his death in 2020, helped guide the celebration through many of its early years. His service remains part of the tradition’s enduring legacy.
